Nila Foundation is a non for profit organisation created in 2004 with the objective of reviving and regenerating the dying river, but not necessarily with a focus of only the water flowing through it. The Nila river originates from the Western Ghats in Tamil Nadu and flows about 250 km through the districts of Palakkad, Thrissur and Malappuram in Kerala into the Arabian Sea. It has been a great source of inspiration for Malayalam litterateurs such as Vallathol, Kunjan Nambiar, and M.T. Vasudevan Nair. However, with time the Organisation focuses to study the river Nila in specific, but rivers in general. One of the main aim is to document the degradation, document the cultural history and to help identify a relation for local communities to the river.
