Arugam Bay is located at the “end of the road” on the East Coast of Sri Lanka. If you’re after remote rural life with all the atmosphere of jungle and adventure this is the place for you. The bay is located 320 km due east of Colombo. “Ullai” as Arugam Bay is locally known is a popular surfing and tourist destination. Beyond surfing there are many things can be enjoyable, Lagoon tour, bird watching, elephant watching, Kumana National Park, Kudumbigala monarchy and many ancient ruins and archaeological sites. There are lot of tourist not only surfers but many nature lovers visiting Arugam Bay. If you want to watch wildlife, you may drive in a jeep 10-15 km down South before sunrise or walk along the lagoon. But in the evenings as well after 5 o’clock till 7 p.m. you meet wild elephants, deer, wild pig, crocodiles and many other animals nearby. Being an area with links back to ancient kingdoms there are many remnants in the jungle from old Buddhist culture. Just outside Pottuvil behind the dunes are excavations of a 2000 year old temple, Modu Maha Vihare. This extension in Sri Lanka is designed to enjoy the stunning beach and wildlife of Arugam Bay, but on the way you will have a chance to have a glimpse of the town of Kandy, located in the midst of hills in a plateau, which crosses an area of tropical plantations, mainly tea. Kandy is one of the most scenic cities in Sri Lanka and during this overnight stop you will visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, famous for having the largest herd of captive elephants in the world, having the opportunity to observe the bathing elephants from the broad river bank as the herd interacts socially, bathing and playing in. In Arugam Bay you will have a lunch in Panama prepared by local community and visit Kudimbigala temple.
